Released in 1990 as Lord Finesse & DJ Mike Smooth, Funky Technician introduced Lord Finesse to the world as one of the most complete artists to emerge from the Bronx hip-hop scene. A razor-sharp MC, elite DJ, and gifted producer, Finesse arrived fully formed — his debut showcasing a command of flow, timing, and boom-bap construction that few could match. Produced largely by Diamond D, DJ Premier and Showbiz, the album stands today as a cornerstone of New York’s golden era, revered for its stripped-back grit and technical precision.

In the years that followed, Finesse's reputation only grew — his production fingerprints on records by The Notorious B.I.G. and Dr. Dre, and widely credited with bringing Big L into the spotlight; to know Lord Finesse is to understand a significant thread running through the fabric of 90s hip-hop.
